Yara Shahidi's 'Black-ish' Spinoff Is Being Called 'Grown-ish'

So, remember when we announced that Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson character from Black-ish was getting her new spin-off show? Well, at the time, College-ish was the working title. We now have an official title!

You ready?

It’s… Grown-ish! How cute is that?!

Freeform will be debuting the series in 2018 and from the looks of the crossover tease episode in last season’s Black-ish (which introduced new characters portrayed by Trevor Jackson and Mallory Sparks), the spin-off will be giving us A Different World vibes. The millennial version!

Grown-ish will be following Yara’s college adventures as she navigates young adulthood away from the safety net of the Johnson’s Los Angeles home. Black-ish creator Kenya Barris revealed the name in a BlackTreeTV interview during the Girls Trip red carpet.

“It’s now called Grown-ish,” Barris said. “We start the writer’s room Monday. Me and Yara have been in casting, looking for the best, brightest and newest faces. We have some people that we’re really excited about. She is amazing, she’s been my partner on this and it’s great.” We’re not sure whether Jackson and Sparks will be returning full-time, but Shahidi’s TV parents Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross will be recurring on the original and spin-off show, concurrently.

Check out the official title announcement and interview below!

What do you think of the new show and it's title? Will you be tuning in?
