Lil’ Rel , who saved the day in Get Out, threw in funny one liners. It even had the breakout star of Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish. But after three seasons, The Carmichael Show has been canceled due to low ratings.

"We love the show. I mean, creatively we've been very involved in the show, involved with that cast and Jerrod [Carmichael] and everyone involved with it from the start. It's been sort of this labor of love," Salke said. "Everybody was hoping the show would really perform and grow. I think we saw a great kind of stable audience sort of slowly building and a lot of critical attention. … But at the same time, it remained in a challenging situation."
Inspired by the life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, the series followed Jerrod and his opinionated North Carolina family as they navigated topics that all families face today in America. Nothing was too uncomfortable to explore, including police protests, guns, religion—even Bill Cosby’s scandal.
TV legend Norman Lear, who produced shows like All in the Family, Sanford and Sons, The Jeffersons, and Good Times, applauded the show for taking chances--but although The Carmichael Show tackled tough topics through humor, it won’t be renewed for a fourth season.
"I think the collective decision was maybe [that] it's best to let the show end," NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke told reporters. "I have to say personally for all of us, it's a really hard decision that wasn't just made on one side of things. It was one of those difficult decisions that kind of live with you for a while that you don't feel great about because you wish it had done better. … This was the situation we found ourselves in."
The Carmichael Show will wrap its third season later this summer.
"For three seasons (okay 2.5), I got to make a show that I love with my friends. It's something I've wanted to do since I was 13," Carmichael said in a statement. "Now, I'm excited to go make other things that I love. Thank you to every person who worked on or watched The Carmichael Show."
