As you’re thinking about your long-time friends, sisters by blood, mentors and sister-soul mates, consider the ways you’d like to show appreciation for their advice, listening ear, hugs and affirmation. Would you like to send them a bouquet of flowers? Take them out to lunch? Or send them their favorite book?
There are plenty of ways to say “Thank You”, and Camara Aunique is doing it in a beautiful way.
The celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert’s clientele includes Yvonne Orji (Molly on “Insecure”), Garcelle Beauvais (Fancy on “The Jamie Foxx Show”), and Kandi Burruss (Xscape, “Real Housewives of Atlanta”), among others.
At one of the lowest points of her lives, a group of trailblazing women helped lift her up; from haircare mavens to social justice warriors and award-winning television professionals, her inner circle is one to aspire to.
To honor the women who nurtured her, Camara Aunique partnered with Hannah Magazine to create an editorial titled “An Ode to Beauty.” It features “Luke Cage” actress Simone Missick, Carol's Daughter Founder Lisa Price, writer and activist Michaela Angela Davis, “I Don't Do Clubs” founder Genese Jamilah, Emmy-nominated TV host Kéla Walker and more.
“At the time of this shoot, I was dead broke, and at a real low point of my career,” she told Essence Magazine. “These women supported, encouraged, uplifted and championed for me. In the midst of my trials, they poured into me, and 'An Ode to Beauty' not only allowed to me to use my craft to cope with my circumstances, but it was my way of expressing gratitude to my friends; I wanted to celebrate them.”
Aunique graced the women’s melanin canvases with her makeup brush while Nicole Newland did their hair and Justin Ifill-Forbes photographed each woman.
The photo shoot not only highlights Aunique’s amazing makeup skills, but showcases the beauty that Black women are, from the inside out.
