Tell It Tuesday: A Lesson for Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson & Those Who Victim Blame

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Terry Crews
By Ta-ning Connai

I use to love me some 50 Cent. Key words: USE TO. I know he got his start as one of the kings of Hip-Hop beefs, but now as a full-grown man with a bunch of kids and a whoooole lotta stuff to do, the beef he instigates on social media is RI-DI-CU-LOUS. Makes me wonder if 50 Cent will ever grow up, or will he keep acting like he's just a small dish full of loose pocket change?

The Power exec seems to take a peculiar kind of pride in trolling online conversations. The man who brought us “go shorty it's ya birfday" has taken on bullying like a sport and gossip like it's a part of his work out plan. And while most of his tweets had many of us cringing in disbelief, his most recent remarks about actor Terry Crews have many more saying, “Alright Curtis Jackson, ENOUGH!”

The first thing you see when you look at Terry Crews (besides his infectious smile) are his gargantuan, supersized muscles. And whenever he makes his biceps (or whatever you call them thangs) jump around to the sound of music, I literally cannot stop laughing. But Terry's testimony before the Senate last Tuesday was no laughing matter. He hoped to bring more rights to sex crime complainants by shedding more light on his own sexual assault. 50 Cent found it hilarious and insinuated that Crews could have prevented the incident from happening. Through memes too cruel to describe, he teased the Brooklyn-Nine-Nine star, as if only the weak and petite fall prey. But many psychological factors come into play when it comes to these kinds of things and physical dominance is not the only way to overpower someone. It's called “flight or fight" (which includes keeping still) and there's no telling what someone's mind will choose to do.

Care 2 Petitions chose to ask Starz Network to kick the rap mogul to the curb, with over 16,000 signatures (including mine). If Roseanne could lose it all for mocking someone's race, then certainly anyone mocking a sexual assault victim should be faced with a similar consequence.

Victim shaming has gotta stop, but sadly, it's nothing new. Here's a tragic tale from the Bible days, one of the worst I ever heard...

Amnon was an extremely entitled guy; anything he wanted, he took it (2 Samuel 13). His half-sister Tamar was one of those “things," as he obsessed over possessing her for years. His friend helped him plan a way to trap his own flesh and blood and this is how her attack played out…

Amnon faked being sick and when his father, King David, came to his aid, he starts claiming that the only way he would “probably" feel better would be if Tamar fed him. Now, even though this don't make NO kinda sense, Daddy Dum Dum ignored the red flags! So, King David gets Tamar, she gets food, and lays it out and is ready to leave. But Amnon yells for his servants to go so he can get an exclusive hand feed! And to put his next words into modern day terms, I bet his whining sounded like this, “Tamar, could you please feed me girl, you know I can't feed myself. Plus, I'm thinking you got the magic touch to keep me alive and well!” Unfortunately, she ends up trusting this jerk; and why wouldn't she, they have the same FATHER! She leans in, he grabs her and violently slams her down. Tamar fought for her dignity and her virginity, but Amnon wouldn't relent. Nothing could stop him from behaving like a beast, so he raped her, and after he threw her out and bolted the door shut.

Tamar was banished to a life of humiliation. Her deadbeat dad kept the issue on hush, but when her brother Absalom found out, he put it on blast and came up with a wicked scheme of his own.

Absalom’s retaliation involved all sorts of disturbing things, from putting a hit out on Amnon, which resulted in Amnon’s death, to raping ten of his dad’s wives! Now, I know he was bitter because of his father's silence, but how in the world did he become the thing he hated most? This did NOTHING to avenge Tamar’s innocence, he just made things even worse. The rebellion Absalom led only led to him being killed and the bad news of his death led to King David wanting to die.

Sorry folks, no happy ending here, just one raped sister, two dead brothers and TEN additional rape victims that had nothing to do with it. But this is a perfect example of the trickle down effect of when grave offenses are not handled correctly. Sexual assault is a horrible thing and the aftermath can be equally as haunting. Let's not perpetuate the pain for its victims by putting them in the hot seat. It's never their fault, there was NOTHING they could do and we should listen to what they tell us. No one should feel blamed for something they couldn't control and no one should be shamed into keeping quiet.

Do you think it's unfair to blame the victim?
