Planning a wedding is tedious, time-consuming and takes all of your energy to go smoothly. While many natural hair brides have opted for straight styles in the past, more are donning their natural beauty with pride.
Do you have a wedding or other formal event to attend and are clueless about how to style your natural hair? If so, this article is just for you. We often hear naturals complain about how difficult it is to style their hair for dressy, black-tie events and honestly, it shouldn't be. Even though having natural hair comes with its own set of challenges, creating a stylish, sophisticated look isn’t one of them.

There are many formal styling options for women with natural hair that are flattering and elegant and here are 3 updos that are perfect for an upcoming fall wedding.
CLASSY UPDO – JOURNEY TO WAIST LENGTH
This beautiful and popular natural hair vlogger created a simple, yet classy up-do that is perfect for a wedding, evening out or a special engagement. To achieve this style, she began by roller setting freshly washed hair with Curlformers. If you don’t have Curlformers, flexi rods or perm rods would work as well.
After allowing her hair to dry and curls to set, she removed the Curlformers and gently separated the curls. She began creating the up-do by pinning the curls loosely back, starting with an angled twist in the front half of her head. The remaining curls were pinned back to form a large bun. This style is glamorous and gives the bride room to experiment with hair accessories, such as jeweled pins or flowers.
SHIRLEY TEMPLE CURL UPDO – NATURALLY TEMI
This Nigerian beauty blogger created a beautiful, playful hairstyle that would be perfect for a natural bride, bridesmaid or wedding guest. For this style, she began with roller setting her hair with medium sized perm rods. After the curls were set, she removed the rollers, carefully separated the curls and fluffed her roots with a pick comb.
She then began pinning the curls up into a semi Frohawk. The curls in the front were pulled forwards and pinned to create a faux bang. We love this style because it can easily be modified and pinned in endless different ways from fully loose pinned in various ways with flowers or a bridal headpiece.
3 NATURAL HAIR UP-DO'S – MARIA ANTOINETTE
This video is actually a compilation of three different wedding-inspired natural hair tutorials using Cantu Shea Butter products. All the styles featured in this video are beautiful and perfect for any natural bride, but we really adore style two – the classic bun.
To get this look, Maria began by pulling her blow-dried natural hair into a high ponytail. She used Cantu edge control and a satin scarf to tame her edges. To create the bun, she used a pack of Marley braid hair. The braid hair was put into a large two-strand twist and then folded into a hair net to create a bun. Maria then separated her ponytail into three sections and pinned them out of the way.
The faux bun was then attached to the base of the ponytail with bobby pins. After the faux bun was securely in place, Maria removed the pinned sections of her ponytail and used it to cover and conceal the hair net.
What I love the most about all of these styles is how they can be created without going to a stylist, can be dressed up or down, and adding pins or flowers make them absolutely stunning!
