Sometimes in efforts to moisturize our hair, we over do it. We end up doing more harm than good. We end up creating a bad product buildup situation.

Product buildup will do the opposite of what you are hoping to achieve.

  • It will often leave your scalp feeling itchy and irritated.
  • Moisture that you try to put in will get blocked by the layers of buildup that you have created.
  • Although your hair may feel greasy you will also feel like it is dry no matter what you do.

Follow these tips to avoid product buildup and effectively infuse your hair with moisture:

IF YOU ARE HEAVY HANDED WITH PRODUCT, SHAMPOO MORE OFTEN AND USE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO.

Cleansing your hair more often will free your hair from the layers of product buildup that is blocking your hair from receiving the hydration that it needs. Heavy product users or those who are prone to product buildup (low porosity naturals) should use a clarifying shampoo at least once per month.

WHEN YOUR HAIR FEELS DRY DON’T ALWAYS REACH OUT FOR A PRODUCT

Remember water is your source of moisture. Sometimes when your hair is feeling dry, if you know you already have a significant amount of product on your hair, lightly spritz your hair with water as needed to revive it and you will be amazed at the difference this makes. You will find that this will be more effective than continuously adding on layers of product.

IN MANY CASES A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY, ESPECIALLY IF THE PRODUCT IS RICH.

This strategy not only saves your strands but your pockets as well.

WORK IN SECTIONS WHEN YOU APPLY PRODUCT

Yes, it can be more timely, however it ensures that you get the best coverage and you will find that you probably don’t use up as much product.

TRY STEAM IF YOU FIND IT HARD TO GET MOISTURE TO PENETRATE

Low porosity hair retains moisture well, the issue is getting the moisture to penetrate. Steam will help with this so that it won’t be as challenging to get that moisture in your hair. You can use steam by simply going into your shower with your hair uncovered, using my clothing steamer hack or trying a hair steamer like the q-Redew.
