In a recent interview with Huffington Post, the hip hop artist shares both her experiences and challenges with the prison system. "Black women are overlooked all the time," she tells the Huff Post. "People don't know all the hardships that being a Black woman you have to face."
Remy Ma was released from prison in 2014 after serving six years of her eight year sentence at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. According to Billboard, Remy Ma was convicted of intentional assault after shooting a member of her entourage over a missing $3,000. Ma would argue that the shooting was an accident, but would later be convicted.
Despite, her reason for serving time in prison, Ma brings up great points in her interview. She expresses feelings on isolation and neglect. "I know women who haven't seen their children in ten years and they live right here in Brooklyn. They're 45 minutes away from the city. People whose husbands forget about them, boyfriends forget about them. Friends forget about them. Their children forget about them. Black women just get thrown away and I'm tired of it."
