Donald Glover Says He Is Retiring Childish Gamino

During June 3rd’s Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York City, the “Redbone” singer announced that his next album will probably be his last. “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album,” he said as he exited the stage.

“There’s nothing worse than like a third sequel, a like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’ he told the Huffington Post. “you know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

Releasing a total of seven mixtapes and two EPs, Glover would release his first album, “Camp,” in 2011. He would then follow up with “Because of the Internet” in 2013. After being nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance at the 2015 Grammy Awards, Glover released his third album, “Awaken, My Love!” in December of 2016, which topped Billboard’s R&B charts at number one.

Although his funkadelic single, “Redbone” has a soulful vibe, Glover revealed that it’s actually a different genre altogether. “As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

But just because he’s retiring, it doesn’t mean you’ve seen (or heard) the last of the Atlanta native. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Golden Globe winner will be voicing Simba in the live action adaption of “The Lion King” and playing Lando Calrissian in next year’s “Hans Solo: A Star Wars Story.”



Be on the lookout for Glover in this summer’s “Spider Man: Homecoming,” the new animated “Deadpool” series on FXX, and on the second season of “Atlanta,” which airs in 2018.
