Debra Lee Explains Why We Won’t See a New Season of “Underground” on BET

Last week, faithful fans learned that “Underground”, the beloved antebellum series in its second season, was cancelled by WGN America.

Using the hashtags #PickUpUnderground and #RenewUnderground, fans have used Twitter to indicate what networks they’d like to see the show on, including HBO, TV One, OWN, Hulu and Netflix.

Both Executive Producer John Legend and Creator-Writer Misha Green chimed in, saying that they’re looking for a new home network as well.

Another option for fans was BET, and according to Debra Lee, Chairman and CEO of BET Networks, the network is and was interested in the show, but could not work out a deal.

Ebony reported that at a recent conference, Lee and producer Will Packer discussed why BET couldn’t pick the series up. After an audience member asked a question about the series, this was Lee’s response:

“I was…I am very interested…we had conversations before it was announced that WGN was canceling it…We couldn’t work out a deal…So I don’t know if they already had a deal, and were using us as a stalking horse or what…but it’s a wonderful program, and I was very interested in it. So I think it’s going to show up somewhere, I just don’t know where yet.”

Following the cancellations of “The Get Down” and “Sense 8” on Netflix, fans are feeling like diverse programming is getting the axe across the board.

Just like we saw more black and brown anchors, news correspondents and television and film programming during Obama’s presidency, I wonder if entertainment industry executives no longer see diversity as a priority since #45 and his administration are clearly anti-inclusion.

What do you think about the cancellation of “Underground”? What network do you want to watch it on?
