On Friday, a Manhattan supreme court judge denied Kesha’s request for an injunction against her record label Sony Music and producer Dr. Luke, who she claims sexually assaulted her for nearly a decade.
Following the ruling, a number of Kesha’s pop contemporaries have leant their support. Chief among them is Taylor Swift, who has donated $250,000 to Kesha “to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time.”
A source connected to Swift told Rolling Stone that “When Taylor saw the heartbreaking courtroom photos of Kesha, it was then that she knew she needed to do something.”
Other musicians, including Lady Gaga, Lorde, and Demi Lovato have publicly backed Kesha through social media.
Kesha filed her lawsuit against Sony and Dr. Luke (née Lukasz Gottwald) in 2014. Gottwald discovered and signed Kesha to his record label in 2005 when she was just 18 years old. Almost immediately, Kesha alleges, Gottwald began sexually abusing her.
Defending her decision, Judge Kornreich said that granting an injunction would result in Sony suffering “irreparable harm,” as the label would never receive the remaining six Kesha albums required by the contract. Additionally, the judge said that nullifying the original record deal would “undermine the state’s laws governing contracts.”
In response to the civil lawsuit two years ago, Gottwald called Kesha “a liar” and accused her of extortion. To this day, he has yet to be criminally charged.
