Deadpool is a runaway smash success, there’s no question about it. In just two weeks of release, the 20th Century Fox release has already scored a number of records, including biggest opening weekend for an R-rated movie, biggest President’s Day weekend, and biggest February and winter openings of all time. It’s also the highest-grossing R-rated comic book film ever and the highest-grossing film in the entire X-Men cinematic universe.
Now the Merc with a Mouth is gunning for Jesus Christ.
After coming in first at the box office for a second weekend in a row and streaking past $200 million in North America faster than any other R-rated title before it, Deadpool is on track to surmount The Passion of the Christ as the highest-grossing rated R feature ever. Domestically, its $235.39 million currently places it at sixth all time, but its current pace should see it easily top Passion’s $370.78 million grand total. Meanwhile, Deadpool’s $493.09 million global gross is tracking to pass the $611.9 million Passion made in 2004. (For box office snobs, it’s worth noting that these numbers are not adjusted for inflation.)
Keep in mind, this is a film star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller had to beg Fox make this movie, and even then were only given a $58 million budget, a pittance for a modern superhero film. A sequel is already in the works, and it looks like Fox’s long-gestating X-Force film is also may go for a hard R rating.
