Reports surfaced a few weeks back that Warner Bros. Pictures was so unsure about the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that execs were considering postponing director Zack Snyder’s Justice League — Part 1 . It appears those murmurings were false, as WB and Snyder have both confirmed that the DC Comics superhero team-up will begin production on April 11th, barely two weeks after BvS debuts.
“The idea that we could begin to boot up a Justice League concept was a cool thing,” Snyder told EW. “It was a little bit of an ‘about time’ moment, and I don’t blame [the studio] for feeling that way, because it’s a long time coming. But I do feel like it’s a little bit of a creative hurdle. It seems like an easy thing to do at first glance, the idea that, ‘Oh, we just get the rest of the superheroes in there.’ But you have to [establish] a world where they can exist.”
Snyder has been instrumental in establishing that world, having kicked off the DC Extended Universe’s feature film branch with 2013’s Man of Steel and will continue it with BvS, out March 25th. The latter sees the return of Henry Cavill as Superman while introducing Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. EW confirmed that Ezra Miller’s Flash, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg will all also cameo in BvS before joining the team in Justice League.
Rumors had it that WB was feeling very uneasy about the prospects of BvS just weeks ago. The talk speculated that early screenings were divisive and execs were afraid of another polarizing outing from Snyder á la Man of Steel. Plus, with a budget ballooning to nearly $400 million (including advertising), the film would need to crack $1 billion to be considered a worthy investment. The one bright spot was said to be Affleck’s take on the Dark Knight, with execs being so impressed that they were considering pushing back Justice League while an Affleck-directed solo Batman film took its place. The new reports contradict this speculation, however.
Of course, that Bat film could still surface between the two parts of Justice League. Gadot’s Wonder Woman solo adventure is filming now with director Patty Jenkins for a June 23rd, 2017 release. Flash and Aquaman films are currently scheduled for 2018, with Justice League — Part 2 to come the following year. That movie will shoot separately from Part 1, so if the first one should underwhelm, there’s a chance Snyder could get bumped after all.
Green Lantern is also expected to be part of the Justice League team, though the Green Lantern Corps. movie isn’t scheduled till 2020, the same year as Cyborg. There’s no word on casting for GL, or when the character will make his big re-introduction in cinemas following the 2011 flop starring Deadpool Ryan Reynolds.
In related news, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has an official runtime of two hours and 31 minutes, which makes it just three minutes longer than Man of Steel. We’ll see how that unfolds March 25th; in anticipation, watch the final trailer once more below.
