This option is great because it uses coconut oil and aloe vera to add moisture while the glycerin helps achieve the definition. The mixture will last for a few weeks which is also a bonus for busy curlies!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
- 1 cup glycerin
- Funnel
- Container
To get started, combine all ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 3-5 minutes on medium heat setting. Carefully remove the bowl and stir until evenly mixed. Transfer it to a sealed container such as a spray bottle. Apply to hair as usual. If it becomes solid over the next few weeks, you can heat in the microwave or in a pot of warm water as needed.
This one uses all natural ingredients to give you definition and hold without worrying about damaging chemicals. Flaxseed is great for giving hair moisture without the hardness of other definers. Aloe vera will naturally help with hold.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup flaxseed oil
- 1/4 cup aloe vera juice
- 1 cup water
- 4-8 drops favorite essential oil
- Spray bottle
- Funnel for easy pouring
Combine flaxseed oil, aloe vera juice, and water in a medium saucepan. You want to bring it to a boil. Once you reach a boil, add your essential oil. You can use any oil, but lavender is a good choice because it will act as a preservative to keep the solution viable longer. Remove from heat while stirring to evenly blend everything together. Pour into a spray bottle using the funnel. Use once cool.
I call this a mix and match recipe because you can use any of your favorite styling gels for this one. Styling gels are known to give you some hold and moisture, but on their own, they may not give the definition you need. When you combine the other ingredients in this recipe with your styling gel, you get better definition.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups of your favorite gel
- 3 ounces natural unrefined shea butter
- 1 tbsp castor oil
- 1 1/2 tsp honey
For this one, you will be using heat again. In a medium saucepan or in a microwave-safe container, warm your shea butter. You want it to be soft enough to stir with the other ingredients, but not completely melted. Aim for slightly lumpy, not liquid. Remove from heat and add the gel, castor oil, and honey. Whisk until all elements are evenly combined. For best results, apply to damp hair.
Whether you are out of product or just enjoy making your own concoctions every now and then, these recipes let you create a DIY curl definer your curls will love!
