It's over, y'all. Or maybe, it's just beginning.
We came out to make our voices heard. We made our choices, took our "I voted" selfies, and hoped for the best.
This year's election results were historic--maybe not in the way we thought, but still history making. While Hillary wasn't declared America's first female president, women were still shattering glass ceilings across the country.
Oregon elected Kate Brown, making her the first openly LGBT governor in the Unites States. Minnesota elected its first Somalian-American Muslim female legislator, Ilhan Omar. In Florida, Stephanie Murphy became the first Vietnamese-American woman elected to Congress, and in Washington, Pramila Jayapal became the first Indian-American woman elected to the House of Representatives.
In California, Kamala Harris represented for Jamaicans and Indians as the second African-American woman ever elected to the Senate and the first for the state. Catherine Cortez Masto was elected in Nevada, making her the first Latina senator, and in Illinois, Tammy Duckworth became the first female senator to have experienced combat. The Iraq War veteran lost both legs in 2004 from injuries she sustained after a helicopter she was landing was struck by a grenade.
These women and many more made history in this election year. They became the firsts, the starters, the trailblazers who are lighting the way for the rest of us and the little girls to come. Their backgrounds and experiences will help to propel us all.
